Logic reasoning and argument
Logic reasoning and arguments
Brain based cognitive skills play pivotal role in building much needed human capabilities to effectively deal with things you face. Hence, logic, reasoning, and arguments centric school curriculums, various exam tests are gaining priority in consistent with rising challenges. Accordingly, I’m going to differentiate and explain the key concepts “Logic reasoning and arguments”.
Technically, all the terms, “Logic reasoning and arguments”, are closely interrelated. So, each one needs to be understood in line with the meaning of other.
Understanding meaning and usages of reasoning
For fresh learning fraternity, reasoning is a sub – type of thinking. The domain of thinking is so vast to cover easily. Whereas, reasoning is a mental process of making and exploring interconnections among sequence of events.
Meaning of reasoning
(Reasoning involves finding and expressing the connections for relationships so that each individual events, object, or idea is explicable in terms of other events, objects, or ideas – smart thinking by Matthew Allen)
Reasoning is a mental process to links, find or understand things or events in relations to others in sequential order. Therefore, reasoning empower us to understand and make sense of the environment you live in.
Generally, reasoning may be correct or invalid. Simply, it is just sequence of things to make meaningful that I mentioned earlier.
Because, only single item or thing can’t be meaningful of itself without relations to other. Clearly, reasoning reveals the meaning of things in relations with other items. Through the reasoning perspective everything is interconnected.
Examples of reasoning
- Cat is a mammal.
- Cow is a mammal.
- Both cat and cow are mammals.
- Biologically, both are animals but
- Ecologically, one is carnivore and other is other is herbivore.
In the above examples, cow and cat are two animals. And, mammals, carnivore, herbivore are connections between them. Obviously, these connections helps to know more about them.
If you want to know whether the reasoning in question is correct or not, we need some rules and principles to judge the validity of conclusions and arguments. In this way, logics play the role to validate reasoning process.
Precisely, validity is the strength of reasoning in any argument. If the conclusion of the argument is in consistent with premises and claims, then, it is called valid argument.
Meaning and definition of logic
Logic is a way to determine proper way of reasoning, and so the valid conclusions. In simple words, logical reasoning means a way of reasoning as per the strict rules and principles of validity.
For example, cow eats grass.
Herbivore are grass eating animals.
Therefore, cow is a herbivore.
In this example, all rules of validity are followed. Here, ” Herbivore are grass eating animals” is factually true. Besides, cow is also grass eating animal. Hence, conclusion, “Cow is a herbivore” is valid as per the rules and principles.
For layman’s understanding, logic determines the validity of reasoning that ultimately leads to formation of valid arguments. It is a scientific methods to avoid fallacies.
Explanation of arguments or argumentation
Argumentation is a means to either prove or convince people to your point of view. So, argument is a tool to widely used in critical thinking.
Logically, argument has three basic elements such as, claim, supporting statement, and concluding results.
Claim is a statement that assert something as true or false. In simple terms, claim is used to take stands either in favour or against the point of view of others.
Suppose, organic farming is eco-friendly and sustainable. This statement asserts in favour of organic farming and opposes chemical induced farming.
Actually, we need to prove this with appropriate data and valid reasons. Only then, we call it valid argument.
Finally, to be a valid argument, there should be proper relations among things in question, and premises should be consistent with the derived conclusions.
Final thought on logic reasoning and argument
In this way, all logic reasoning and arguments are closely interrelated and they need to be understood in line with one was another.
Firstly, reasoning makes tour task easier by providing meaning to items in question by relating others. It helps to find, understand, and link things to sense the world around you.
Secondly, logic determines whether the links are valid or not. To be a valid reasoning, assumption as well as derived conclusions should be consistent.
Lastly, argument is a powerful means to persuade people to your point of view with claim, reason, and concluding results.
